It has been built by the Ewaso Ng’iro South Development Authority (ENSDA) and will source hides from this area as well as from the Nakuru, Nyandarua and Kajiado counties.
ENSDA managing director Sammy Naporos was quoted by local media as saying that the facility is currently processing 1.5 tonnes of hides and skins per day.
The building of the new tannery, which will be run by the government, is part of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ‘Big Four’ strategy. The leather industry falls under the manufacturing pillar of this strategy.
