Cooperation is key to the future of Kenya’s leather industry

A total of five national associations are involved: Tanners Association of Kenya (TAK); Leather Articles Entrepreneurs Association (LAEA), Kenya Footwear Manufacturers Association (KFMA); Cobblers Association of Kenya; and the Hides and Skins Association.
In addition, there are a number of affiliate members, including development agencies and academic institutions.
Speaking at the launch, Beatrice Mwasi, founder of LASK, said: “Leather Apex has been formed to promote efficiency across the leather value chain. Our core objective is to enhance the global competitiveness of the leather industry by fostering a synergistic approach across the leather value chain in addressing capability challenges, developing business opportunities and to advocate for the development of a favourable business environment.”
The Kenyan government has represented at the launch ceremony by Betty Maina, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives. She used her keynote speech to highlight that the government is contributing resources to support the leather sector as part of its ‘Big 4’ industrial transformation agenda.
