African leather institute to promote cleaner production

Kenyan ministers have declared the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) a “knowledge and innovation-based institution" with a mandate to support SMEs.

It is unclear how the institute’s role will change, but it said in a statement: “ALLPI is proud to share this exciting news with all its leather fraternity, as all the achievements are the results of the concerted effort of all of us.”

ALLPI presented its recent programmes to ministers, which include initiatives to add more value to hides domestically.

Ministers encouraged the ALLPI to support leather clusters’ adoption of cleaner production methods and boost e-commerce to strengthen trade.
