ALLPI proposes launch of tannery in Eswatini

Representatives of the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) recently carried out a field mission to Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, during which they discussed the possibility of establishing a tannery in the country.

The mission was led by Nicholas Mudungwe, programmes coordinator, and Harrison Mungai, leather value chain and tannery expert.

They held a training session that touched on subjects such as business plan development and the implementation of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). It took place at the Cooperative Development College in Ezulwini. There were a total of 28 participants, of which nine were women. 

Following the conclusion of the training programme, the ALLPI carried out a feasibility study for the proposed tannery. This included visiting a number of institutions, most notably the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, Swaziland Meat Industries, and the Swaziland Leather and Leather Products Association.

ALLPI has said all the institutions it visited support the idea of establishing a tannery in Eswatini as it will create employment, generate revenue and improve the lives of local people.
