CSCB initiative recognises its first tanning group
15/01/2018
The CSCB initiative was launched in 2015 by Brazil’s main industry body, CICB. At the time of its launch, sources in Brazil told leatherbiz.com that, while CICB and Brazilian tanners have given significant support to a number of international industry initiatives in recent years, the thinking in the Brazilian leather sector was that these programmes missed out components focusing on social aspects.
The process to audit and certify tanneries across the country has been taking place ever since, culminating in this first recognition for Fuga Couros, which is located in São Leopoldo, between Porto Alegre and Novo Hamburgo.
The tanning group has been recognised for its dedication to four areas related to sustainability: economy, environment, social, and sustainability management.
The criteria of the assessment were established by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). Auditing was performed by an accredited certification body.
CICB hopes the CSCB initiative will help to ensure the Brazilian leather industry remains in line with the sustainability demands of the world market.
