Couros Bom Retiro signs up for CSCB initiative
08/11/2016
The main industry body in Brazil, CICB, announced the new sustainability certification programme in 2013 and fully launched the initiative in 2015. Based on what CICB calls the three pillars of sustainability (economics, the environment and social responsibility) audits examining 173 different indicators are carried out by Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), following which tanners can obtain bronze, silver, gold and diamond certification.
With a capacity to produce up to 10 thousand hides per day in six units across Brazil and one in Argentina, Couros Bom Retiro is now part of the programme. Gilmar Harth, a director of the tanning group, has said that sustainability has been “increasingly relevant” to the international leather market. He said: “International clients are looking to buy more and more products from certified companies. With CSCB, we hope to reach that level of excellence in processes and ensure our clients that our leather comes from a production set-up with social, economic and sustainable awareness.”
