Three more tanneries eye CSCB recognition

04/05/2018
The Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB) has announced that three new tanneries, Santa Croce, Real Nelore and Curtume Santo Antônio, have begun work to satisfy the initiative’s 173 indicators.

The CSCB initiative was launched in 2015 by Brazil’s main industry body, CICB. It assesses participating tanneries for their sustainability in terms of economic, social and environmental responsibility. Tanners can achieve bronze, silver, gold or diamond CSCB certification.

The process to achieve this certification is an extensive one. Each tannery in the programme must first take part in preparation phase in which it works on the 173 pre-defined indicators. They can then request an audit of their operations.

Two Brazilian tanneries have already been certified, Fuga Couros, which achieved silver certification, and Courovale, which went a step further and achieved gold certification.

The international importance of the CSCB initiative has grown in recent months following an agreement with ICEC (the Italian quality certification institute for the leather sector). The bodies have agreed to recognise each other’s sustainability certification programmes.

Later this month, CICB will present details of the CSCB programme at the twentieth UITIC Congress, which is organised by the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians. It takes place in Porto from May 16-18.
