Leather industry leaders in Italy and Brazil have signed a partnership agreement that gives mutual recognition to sustainability certification programmes run in each country.

The agreement was signed in Hong Kong on March 13 by ICEC (the Italian quality certification institute for the leather sector) and by CSCB (the Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability). Both bodies signed with the full backing of their respective national tanning industry associations, UNIC for Italy and CICB for Brazil.

“Our programmes are based on robust indicators,” said ICEC director, Sabrina Frontini, “but we do want to simplify our processes.”

CSCB spokesperson, Rafael Andrade, said in Hong Kong: “This agreement will help us move towards a better industry. It wasn’t easy, but we have worked hard and have each accepted the necessary trade-offs. We are taking a pragmatic approach because we believe we need effective, international action right away.”
