Another tannery joins CSCB initiative

Rio Grande do Sul-based Rhoma Peles has become the latest tannery to join the Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certification (CSCB) initiative.

Specialising in the tanning of goat and sheep skins, Rhoma Peles has recently started to expand into international markets after a number of years supplying material for clothing, shoes and bags in Brazil.

“I believe that in the current market, only companies that are certified and are concerned about sustainability have any chance of long-term success,” explained Roberto Luís Hartmann, technical production manager for Rhoma Peles.

Brazil’s main industry body in Brazil, CICB, unveiled the sustainability certification programme in 2013 before fully launching the initiative in 2015. Audits examining 173 different indicators are carried out by Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), following which tanners can obtain bronze, silver, gold and diamond certification. They assess what CICB calls the three pillars of sustainability - economics, the environment and social responsibility.
