A director of one of the tanneries to have signed up for the Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certification (CSCB) initiative has explained the benefits he thinks his company will gain from taking part.

The main industry body in Brazil, CICB, announced the new sustainability certification programme  in 2013 and fully launched the initiative in 2015. Based on what CICB calls the three pillars of sustainability (economics, the environment and social responsibility) audits examining 173 different indicators are carried out by Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), following which tanners can obtain bronze, silver, gold and diamond certification.

Rafael Coelho, a director of Curtume Moderno, said in recent comments that he believes CSCB will help his company have a clearer vision of the market and of its way of working. “The programme outlines norms that will help guide our operations,” he said. “And in a country with such a complex legislation, CSCB will give organisations outside the leather industry a baseline for assessing the sector.”
