Stahl sustainability director acknowledges the work of ZDHC

The sustainability director of leather chemicals group Stahl, Mike Costello, has praised the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) group for its efforts to make the leather industry’s use of chemicals more sustainable.

Speaking at the CSCB Sustainability Forum in Brazil in mid-August, Mr Costello said efforts to ban harmful chemicals and to put in place manufacturing restricted substance lists must continue; he said they offer tanners an opportunity to improve their environmental management to make their production cleaner.

He acknowledged that chemicals manufacturers face an important challenge in making products available to tanners that will allow them to change the way they produce.

Organised by Brazil’s main tanning industry association, CICB, the Sustainability Forum took place for the fifth time in 2016, but this time under the umbrella of the Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certification (CSCB) programme.
