Courovale takes CSCB to new levels

Curtume Courovale, a leather manufacturer based in Portão in Rio Grande do Sul, has become the second tanner in Brazil to secure the Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB), following in the footsteps of Fuga Couros.

The CSCB initiative was launched in 2015 by Brazil’s main industry body, CICB. It assesses participating tanneries for their sustainability in terms of economic, social and environmental responsibility.

Criteria for CSCB are in keeping with a national standard, ABNT NBR 16.296, and audits are carried out by internationally accredited testing body Inmetro. In total there are There are 173 indicators for tanneries to work on, including reducing water and energy consumption, product quality control, worker health and safety and management of raw materials and restricted substances.

Tanners can achieve bronze, silver, gold or diamond CSCB certification. CICB has revealed that while Fuga Couros achieved silver, Courovale has gone one better and achieved gold. Another 18 leather manufacturers are currently going through the CSCB certification process.

Courovale is also the first company to be certified since Italy and Brazil signed a partnership agreement that gives mutual recognition to sustainability certification programmes run in each country, CSCB and ICEC certification (from the Italian quality certification institute for the leather sector). CICB has said it believes this will help Courovale promote its leather in international markets.
