Fuga Couros on track for new sustainability accreditation

03/06/2015
Brazilian tanning group Fuga Couros is on track to be one of the first to be accredited with the new Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB) for sustainable economic, social and environmental  production.

Tanning industry association CICB introduced the new sustainability certification programme earlier this year, following an announcement that it first made on the subject in June 2013.

Industry sources in Brazil have told World Leather that, while CICB and Brazilian tanners have given significant support to a number of international industry initiatives in recent years, the thinking in the Brazilian leather sector was that these programmes missed out components focusing on social aspects.

The standard has now been released and the certification process is under way. Brazil’s biggest tanning group, JBS, has said it will attempt to CSCB certify three of its facilities in Brazil, two wet blue tanneries and a finishing plant, in what remains of 2015.

Fuga Couros, located in São Leopoldo, between Porto Alegre and Novo Hamburgo in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, has been another early adopter and, according to CICB, is already close to accreditation.

Managing director, Patricia Fuga, has said the company was happy to sign up for the certification programme as a means of keeping itself up to date and of improve its processes.

The executive president of CICB, José Fernando Bello, has said the certification programme is certain to mark a new milestone for the Brazilian leather industry. He said Fuga Couros is setting a good example in showing early interest in certification and expressed hope that other “truly professional companies” would follow suit.

Fuga Couros processes around 12,000 hides per day at four sites.
