JBS beef exports to Venezuela quadruple in four years

Brazilian beef company JBS, the world’s biggest tannery owner, has seen its beef exports to Venezuela grow from less than $200 million in 2010 to $900 million last year.

The growth is in part due to a Venezuelan policy to improve food security. The president of Venezuela’s congress, Diosdado Cabello, met JBS officials over the summer to cement ties, according to a report on Bloomberg.

JBS has a $2.1 billion contract with the country and provides almost half its red meat.

Bloomberg reported that as a consequence of the Venezuelan government’s land redistribution programme, domestic beef production has fallen from 60% of the market a decade ago to 20%, citing the country’s meat council and the US Department of Agriculture.
