Vietnam growth appeals to Brazilian tanners

Eight Brazilian tanning companies have signed up to take part in a trade mission to Vietnam that industry association CICB has arranged for July 13-17.

As well as making technical visits to factories in Vietnam, the Brazilian delegation will visit the Shoes & Leather Vietnam exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City. CICB said on announcing the visit that it wants to help Brazilian tanners secure access as suppliers to Vietnamese footwear manufacturers, who have long complained of being unable to source enough leather locally.

CICB president, José Fernando Bello, said at the time: “Vietnam is the fourth-biggest buyer of hides and skins in the world and, in 2014, spent $1.3 billion on importing this raw material. Reports suggest it will double the amount it spends on leather, hides and skins by 2025.”

Mr Bello went on to say that CICB’s research shows that Vietnam is home to 600 factories producing shoes and leathergoods at the moment, with a combined output of 1 billion pairs of shoes and 150 million bags per year, 40% of which are made of leather. “There can be no doubt that Vietnam is on the rise,” he said, “and if it is, Brazil’s leather sector has to be there.”

In a similar exercise in 2014, six Brazilian tanners who took part generated business worth $5.3 million. The eight companies who will go to Vietnam this time are Alexander Shoes, America Leather, Couros Bom Retiro, Curtume Cubatão, Durlicouros, JBS Couros, Liderkoll and Pacific Leather.
