Durlicouros delivers first fully tracked hides

Brazilian tannery Durlicouros has delivered the first hides under its Certification of Origin and Traceability Implementation Initiative (COTI).

In November, it joined three other tanners to launch the scheme, with the aim of using a QR code on each hide, proving it has not been sourced in an area at risk of deforestation.

At the time of the launch, Ivens Domingos, Durli Couros sustainability director, said: "Soon our European customers will be able to enter a code on a platform and have access to all information about the animal that generated this product.”

One thousand wet blue skins had arrived in Italy at the beginning of this week, according to a report on Reuters.

Durli was set up in the 1960s by brothers Jandyr, Olímpio and Egídio Durli, and is run by the second and third generation of the family. It operates eight units in Brazil and one in Paraguay. It can process six million hides per year.

In December, Brazilian meat and leather producer Minerva announced a “significant milestone in the leather industry” by making the first shipment of fully traceable leather.
