Brazil records second-highest annual cattle slaughter

In 2023, 34.06 million cattle head were slaughtered in Brazil, an increase of 13.7% compared with the previous year, according to government statistics.

This is the second highest result obtained in the history the survey. The highest was recorded in 2013.

In 2023, Brazilian tanneries covered by the national survey said they received 34 million whole pieces of bovine rawhide, an increase of 11.7% compared with the previous year. 

Mato Grosso continued to lead the reception of skins by tanneries in 2023, with 17.1%, followed by Goiás (13.7%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (12.4%).

During the year, a record number of hogs, pigs and chickens were slaughtered.
