Brazilian companies launch cattle-tracing scheme
Brazilian tannery Durlicouros has joined four companies to launch Certification of Origin and Traceability Implementation Initiative (COTI) with the aim of offering “deforestation-free” sourcing.

The scheme attaches tracking devices to cattle, and the partners have traced 113,000 since a pilot began in the second half of the year, reports Reuters.

The newswire noted this is only a fraction of Brazil’s 234 million-strong cattle herd.

Ivens Domingos, Durlicouros sustainability director, said: "Soon our European customers will be able to enter a code on a platform and have access to all information about the animal that generated this product.”

Durlicouros (pictured) produces 20,000 pieces of leather per day and employs 1,500 across seven Brazilian states, as well as a production centre in Paraguay.
