Fendi exhibits artisanal Baguettes in Rome
16/11/2021
Launched last year, the ongoing scheme has so far resulted in twenty handmade interpretations of the brand’s signature Baguette handbag, each produced by an artisan in possession of technical know-how particular to a specific Italian region.
Artisan Simona Iannini’s tombolo aquilano lacework technique, used for one version of the Baguette, is representative of the Abruzzo region, for example.
Floor-to-ceiling LED screens help to ground the exhibition in the context of a historical and cultural narrative, Paris-based LVMH said, showcasing the design and craft processes undertaken by artisans in the bags’ conceptualisation and assembly.
All twenty regional techniques are featured in a series of videos which together form part of a 30-metre multimedia installation of craft tables, intended to foster a sense of “an immersive atelier simulation”, as the luxury group described it. Melding the physical and the digital, each freshly interpreted Baguette is presented alongside the tools and materials used to realise its redesign.
LVMH added that the project is not only meant to bolster the preservation and cascading of Italian artisanal know-how, but also help to support networking through strengthening relationships.
