Softly launched in November of last year, New York City-based leathergoods brand Advene has since won favour among a fashionable crowd including models Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber.

Dedicated to minimising unnecessary plastics, the female-founded enterprise uses only “100% traceable” cow leathers (plus some organic hemp and “minimal” hardware) for its handbags, which are processed in a Leather Working Group scope-C gold-standard tannery – of which there are 13 worldwide, according to the brand.

On its website, Advene describes its choice of leather as finely grained, “buttery soft” and double-facing for “long-term durability”, including in the face of scratches and water exposure.

During the 12-month prototyping of its inaugural product, the Age bag (pictured), the brand worked alongside what it called master artisans to engineer a “unique” pattern without the need for plastic fillers which are so often added to handbag linings. Instead, the article’s structure and shape are supported only by the engineering of its interior-facing cow and suede leathers. It requires 1.2 square-metres to make, yet weighs around 400 grams due to its lack of plastic fillers.

Commenting on its first twelve months in business, the company said that it had managed to sell more than 500 bags to shoppers located in 30 countries over the period. It also stated that its own data would suggest that 89% of its customers use their Advene handbag multiple times per month.

“We poured our hearts and souls into creating intentionally unique, responsibly built bags. Every day, [our customers’] overwhelming support and thoughtful feedback motivates us to set even higher standards for innovative design and to continue honouring our founding belief: that beauty and integrity our one and the same,” the business emphasised in a statement.

Advene currently stocks three styles: the Age top-handle handbag, the Edge shoulder bag and the Trench tote. It was co-founded by ex-Coach and Marc Jacobs handbag designer Zi Xuan and former marketer Yijia Wang.
