BMW the latest car group to report September slump

12/10/2018
Automotive group BMW has revealed it sold 1,834,810 vehicles worldwide in the first nine months of 2018, an increase of 1.3% year on year, despite what it called “ongoing headwinds” in several major regions.

Sales in September fell 0.8% year on year to 237,781 units, which the company attributed to “intense competition in Europe”.

“In the face of a combination of exceptional challenges, we have achieved a steady sales result,” said Pieter Nota, BMW board member responsible for sales “The third quarter in Europe was significantly affected by market distortions caused by the introduction of the new WLTP testing procedure at the beginning of September.”

The testing procedure he refers to is related to measurements of the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of passenger cars. It came into effect on September 1. It has resulted in delivery delays for a number of automotive groups in Europe, principally because the tests now take longer to complete.
