Tuscan tanners feel first pinch from big fashion houses

The president of Italian tanners association Assoconciatori, Franco Donati, has impressed the importance of inspiring a younger generation of tanners to take up the mantle.

At a meeting to discuss its annual report, he said: "The tannery has long been the economic heartbeat of our district and activities, companies and labour have developed around it, but our industry must continually regenerate in order to grow. Encouraging young people to join the sector is one of the main objectives in which we invest to illustrate to them the many opportunities on offer."

However, he warned that the district’s relationships with the big brands showed the first “negative signals” in the first part of 2015.

"The close collaboration with leading fashion houses that made us keep a positive trend in recent years of general crisis, showed instead, in this first quarter of 2015, the first negative signals. The uncertainties that have hit the luxury market in 2014 led to caution in purchasing.”

He cited the declines in demand from China and Russia as causing uncertainty in the first few months, “but the opportunities for repositioning our businesses are real”.
