UNIDO turns to Italian partners to support leather sector in India
11/10/2012
As a first step the group visited the tanning cluster of Santa Croce sull’Arno in Tuscany, visiting the facilities of tanners and other leather-sector companies in the area and examining the structure of what UNIDO ITPO Italy has called “this integrated tannery supply chain, based on flexible production and market demand adaptability”.
The tour next took in a visit to the SIMAC - Tanning Tech Fair in Bologna to look close up at new technology for tanning and footwear manufacture. At the event, UNIDO ITPO Italy organised several meetings between IFLMEA and local trade associations, including the Santa Croce tanners’ association Assoconciatori and Italian tanning machinery manufacturers’ association Assomac, to explore the possibility of partnerships.
The study tour will conclude with a focus on environmental issues, with a seminar on solar energy and a visit to the Acquarno centralised water treatment plant in Santa Croce.
This initiative sits within the framework of a knowledge transfer plan called Consolidated Project for SME Development in India, which aims to transfer Italian know-how to Indian companies to help them improve their competitiveness and capabilities. The project, funded by the Italian Development Cooperation and carried out by UNIDO since 2007, has identified leather, along with textiles and automotive, as a sector with high potential for development in India.
