Reversal of fortunes for Italy’s tanning and leather machinery makers
Italy’s tanning machinery sector saw a growth of 12% in exports in 2013, which industry association ASSOMAC describes as a “trend reversal”.

Exports of tanning machines increased 23% while for leathergoods machines the increase was 13%, and 8% for footwear machines.

The difficulties were overcome by the sector’s ability to innovate and be flexible, according to the National Association of Italian Manufacturers of Footwear, Leathergoods, Tannery Machines and Accessories.

At its annual meeting, it also highlighted that its website had been translated into 10 languages and now describes it as a “platform to share information and know-how around the world”.

“The substantial increase in foreign visitors shows the usefulness and opportunities that this change offers to its members, with the percentage of foreign visitors at 70%, versus 30% from Italy," it said.

In 2013, companies in the sector exported to 131 countries. The largest markets were China, India, Brazil and Mexico.
