Italy: senior tanning industry figure dies

A senior figure in the tanning industry in Santa Croce sull’Arno in Tuscany, Ivo Nuti, has died.

Mr Nuti was the founder in 1955 of the tanning group that bears his name. He started out with a workforce of 15, concentrating at first on producing leather for the local shoe industry. In 1970, the Nuti tannery began to win business as a supplier to luxury leathergoods and footwear brands in other parts of Europe.

The company acquired a specialist vegetable-tanned leather producer, Lloyd, in 1982 and added a specialist in calf leather, Everest, in 1989.

Although two of his sons, chief executive, Fabrizio, and finance director, Andrea, had taken over the running of the group, Ivo Nuti was still its honorary chairman at the time of his death.

On hearing the news, Franco Donati, president of the Santa Croce tanning industry association, Assoconciatori, said of Ivo Nuti: “His contribution towards making Santa Croce such an important cluster for the tanning industry was fundamental and the fruit of the global vision he had. He was able to face up to all the challenges that came about when this became a global market. He understood how important research and innovation are to growth.”
