JSC Volga Tannery has partnered World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia as part an increased drive towards protecting the environment.

Through its EMS (environmental management system) policy, it has donated part of its New Year gifts budget to the organisation and has joined the WWF Panda Club.

The tannery said: “The exceptional quality of leather produced at the tannery depends directly on the water that feeds the production, which is taken from the Seliger Lake. Our goal is not only to keep the lake and the nature around it at its original quality but also to help save the nature of our country.”

It installed a 100 million ruble (£1.2 million) Italian wastewater treatment facility to protect the Seliger Lake.

The tannery was established in 1730, making it one of Russia’s oldest leather companies. Many of the current employees are fourth and the fifth generation leatherworkers.
