Volga achieves LWG gold again

Russia’s Volga Tannery has been awarded the Leather Working Group (LWG) gold standard – the second consecutive time it has achieved the accolade.
The audit conducted by the UK-based LWG confirmed its production processes complied with the strict international standards.
A Volga spokesperson told leatherbiz: “We work hard to make sure that all production processes fully comply with LWG strict standards, and set a number of production improvement objectives, including the reduction of air emissions, reduction of solid waste and suspended waste and the recycling of packaging and salt.
“Our efforts were appreciated by LWG and this year we are once again awarded by the gold certificate.”
The tannery was established in 1730, making it one of Russia’s oldest leather companies. It claims the water it uses from the local Lake Seliger contributes to the high quality of its leather.
The tannery has launched its own ecological line – chrome-free, fully vegetable, semi-vegetable and metal-free crust and leather. It has also developed an energy saving programme through which it has reduced energy consumption by 30% compared with 2016.
In January, Volga also received a Best in Class “A” Grade for its Environmental Sustainability Performance as part of an Inditex audit.
