New leather training programme on the horizon in Morocco

18/02/2019
A new training course targeted at those working within Morocco’s tanning and leathergoods sectors will be launched following an agreement between the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (USMBA) in Fes and the country’s ministry for tourism, air transport, handicrafts and social economy.

USMBA has said around 110 artisans will be trained at its technology school from 2020. The course will consist of 100 hours of practical and theoretical training.

It will be open to artisans from across the country. USMBA will make available its staff and laboratory facilities to allow more people to learn about tannery and leathergoods manufacturing operations.

The aim is to build the skills of Morocco’s artisans in order to improve the quality of the products being made in the country. This will allow them to be more competitive in global markets.

The university has been running a professional degree programme dedicated to the leather sector since 2015. It is run with the support of a leading engineering school in Igualada, Spain. The two institutions have staff and student exchange programmes and partner on scientific and educational initiatives.
