Funding available for Fez leather industry

The government chamber in charge of supporting artisanal skills in the Fez-Meknes region of Morocco has said funding worth around $18 million has been made available for projects related to the local leather industry.

This pledge was made during the inaugural edition of a new exhibition in Fez dedicated to leather craftsmanship. It ran from July 12-21, bringing together a range of leather industry professionals to promote the economic value of the region’s leather sector. Visitors were able to discover the quality of locally-made leather products, including small leathergoods, shoes and clothing. 

Projects to receive funding include the construction of a new tannery in the Ain Noqbi district, a technical support centre for the tanneries in Chouara, and a raw material market, also in Ain Noqbi. Money has also been set aside to restore tanneries in the old Medina quarter, part of a wider programme to renovate historic buildings.
