France remains fourth in list of leading leather exporters

29/01/2018
A report by French leather industry body the Conseil National du Cuir (CNC) has shown that the country is the world’s fourth most prolific exporter of leather and leather products. The data in the report refers to 2016.

The list is headed by China, which is responsible for 36% of exports. The report points out, however, that this is down from 45% in 2010.

The other two countries ahead of France are Italy, which is responsible for 16% of global leather sector exports, and Vietnam, which has a share of 10.5%.

France and Italy contribute half of Europe’s total leather sector exports, which in turn represent a third of the global total.

France is in third place when it comes to exports of leathergoods with 10% of the total. This is primarily due to demand for luxury handbags manufactured in the country. It is also in third place for exports of leather and raw hides, making up 6% of the global total.

The CNC says there are around 9,400 businesses in France across the whole leather supply chain. They have a combined turnover of €25 billion and employ 130,000 people.
