Discussing the leathergoods sector as a source of employment in France at an event in Paris on December 7, CNC said France currently has 430 leathergoods manufacturing companies and that they employ a collective total of 19,000 people. It also revealed that 80% of the people who work in leathergoods manufacture in France are women.
In spite of the predominance of smaller firms, it also confirmed that the major French leathergoods brands are important sources of employment growth and the retention of skills in the industry. It said that Hermès is currently recruiting 250 new leathergoods workers per year, while the figure for Louis Vuitton is 170 per year.
Both these brands have training programmes onto which they are actively recruiting young people who want to leather the ancient artisan skills these companies’ craftspeople still employe. On a smaller scale, Chanel recruits 15 new apprentice leathergoods workers every year.
