France maintains its position in ranking of leading leather exporters

The French leather industry employs 70,000 people and has a turnover of €15 billion, according to a new report from the Conseil National du Cuir, the national leather industry body.

These figures, which relate to the state of the industry in 2015, are largely in line with what was reported for 2014. It said that France has 8,000 businesses across the whole leather supply chain.

The report highlighted that France was the third-largest exporter of raw hides in the world in 2015, behind US and Australia. It was also third in the pecking order for leathergoods exports, behind China and Italy. Overall, France occupied fourth place in the list of leading exports when all sectors are considered.

Although France occupies only 13th place in the list of largest exporters of finished leather, the Conseil National du Cuir said it was top of the tree for finished calf leather and exotic leather.
