France’s Conseil National du Cuir, the confederation that brings together 19 different federations and professional unions linked to the French leather industry, has published a new report putting the number of businesses involved in the whole supply chain in France at 8,000, with a combined turnover in 2014 in €15 billion.

The total number of people the industry employed in France then was 70,000 and the country was the third-largest exporter of raw hides in the world (after the United States and Australia) and also the third-largest exporter of leathergoods (after China and Italy). However, in terms of tanning, the country holds only fourteenth place.

Overall, France held fourth place in the list of leading exporters, taking the entire leather sector into account. “French creativity and savoir-faire continue to attract international consumers,” said Le Conseil National du Cuir in a press release at the time of the report’s release.
