France’s Conseil National du Cuir sets out proposals ahead of general election

France’s Conseil National du Cuir has published a new white paper offering proposals for the leather industry that it wants candidates in the country’s 2017 general election to pay heed to. The election takes place in May.

Its proposals include an end to a “tax ceiling”, which has led to leather companies in France missing out on funding of €4.5 million in the last five years, with the money going to central government instead.

Another proposal is that livestock farmers should receive financial support to modernise their equipment and look after animals better so that more of the hides and calfskins that come from their animals after slaughter will be of the quality required by the luxury industry. The Conseil said that at the moment, fewer than 20% of French calfskins are tanned into leather that meets the criteria of the luxury industry.

On releasing the white paper, Frank Boehly, president of the Conseil National du Cuir, said: “The businesses of this sector are subject to constraints that undermine them. We ask our future political decision-makers to take into consideration our proposals so that our sector, made stronger and more competitive, can create businesses and jobs in France and continue to be one of the finest ambassadors of French savoir-faire around the world.”
