France sees drop in finished leather exports
The French leather sector experienced a 3% drop in the value of exports of finished leather in the first half of 2017, according to data from leather industry representative body, the Conseil National du Cuir.

Exports of finished bovine leather were €48.6 million, down 8% compared to the same period of 2016. A 21% drop in exports of finished bovine leather to Africa was offset by a 10% increase in exports to countries within the EU, France’s principal export market.

There was a 3% drop in exports of French calf leather, but exports of finished sheepskin increased 12% and there was a 26% jump in exports of exotic leathers.

Over the same six-month period, exports of finished leathergoods increased 12%, reaching €3.2 billion. This was led by the strong performance of luxury handbags. Footwear exports registered a 6% increase in value to €1.5 billion.

Frank Boehly, president of the Conseil National du Cuir, said the results from the first half of 2017 were “encouraging” for the French leather industry after a difficult year in 2016. He emphasised the importance of transmitting the savoir-faire associated with leather and leathergoods production in France to the next generation, calling it “indispensable”.
