‘Leather industry could generate over 700,000 jobs in Nigeria’

The Nigerian minister of science and technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, has said the leather industry holds the key to the country’s growth, jobs and wealth creation.

Speaking at an economic forum in the state of Sokoto, Mr Onu said the leather industry could generate more than 700,000 jobs in the country.

He added that Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is working to improve the socioeconomic well-being of Nigerians by promoting local products and transforming the economy. 

The ministry of science and technology plans to promote value addition in the leather industry through the use of innovative technologies, according to Mr Onu. 

The minister of state for industry, trade and investment, Ai'sha Abubakar, has also encouraged the Nigerian people to tap into the economic potential of the leather industry by participating in the promotion of ‘Made in Nigeria’ products.
