Nigeria is exploring how investment in leather technology could help the country diversify its economy, a government official has said.

Belema Wakama, permanent secretary of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, made the comments during the opening ceremony of the second Annual General Meeting of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists of Nigeria.

Speaking at the event at the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) in the city of Zaria, Ms Wakama said promoting leather technology and leather products would help to quicken its efforts to increase industrialisation.

She added that the Ministry is determined to bring increased technology and innovation into all sectors of the economy.
