Nigerian leather industry needs more skilled workers

The founder of a new leather fair in the Nigerian city of Lagos has called on the country’s government to put in place policies to boost the leather industry.

The Lagos Leather Fair will take place between June 2 and 4 in Nigeria’s largest city. Around 50 exhibitors, including tanneries from Kano and leathergoods manufacturers, will take part in the event.

To secure the future of the Nigerian leather industry there is a need for appropriate government policies, large raw material supply and a bigger pool of skilled labour, according to the fair’s organiser Femi Olayebi.

Ms Olayebi said the aim of the fair is to draw attention to the untapped opportunities within the leather industry. It will also to serve to identify the challenges currently facing the industry and to provide a forum to discuss possible solutions to them.
