It was organised by stakeholders from states where this industry is most prominent, with the help of the Central Bank of Nigeria and agricultural lending initiative NIRSAL.
During his keynote address, Atiku Bagudu, governor of Kebbi state, called on Nigeria’s different states to capitalise on the potential of the leather sector, explaining that it has the capacity to generate foreign exchange and to create wealth.
He also appealed to the national government to protect the leather industry and to help the country’s tanners to advance their manufacturing methods. He stressed that investment in these facilities is essential to enhance the hides and skins value chain.
Among the issues discussed during the summit was the plight of skins from the Sokoto red goat and how this material’s impact in export markets can be maximised.
