Nigeria seeks to harness the potential of its leather sector

Nigeria’s Federal Executive council has formally approved a new national leather and leather products policy, which is designed to boost the country’s leather industry and create new job within it.

The minister of science and technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, told local media that approval of the policy would allow the leather sector to harness its local resources. He explained that raw and semi-finished products are currently exported, adding that processing them domestically instead would generate employment and increase revenue.

Mr Onu also predicted that the policy will lead to the creation of more tanneries and of other factories for processing leather products.

“It is a very vital area because if we harness the livestock that we have in Nigeria and ensure that we process the hide and skin of all animals in the country, we will be creating a lot of jobs and wealth,” he said.
