Leather is key to economic growth, Nigerian minister says

Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, was the guest of honour at the graduation ceremony of a training programme sponsored by the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST).

More than 80 trainees have recently completed this programme, which is designed to offer students specialist leathercraft skills in order to boost employment and provide a workforce for the leather industry. It has the support of the United Nations Development Programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Onu urged the graduates to use their training and new knowledge to establish business ventures that can provide them with sustained income. 

Also in attendance was Dr Eucharia Ngozi Oparah, acting director-general of NILEST. She said the leather value chain has the potential to employ thousands of Nigerians, either directly or indirectly. 

She added that the leather industry is a significant foreign exchange earner for the country, pointing to its prominent place in the economic development agenda of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
