Plans by the government of the Nigerian state of Sokoto to revitalise the region’s leather industry have been boosted by a visit from United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

The team from UNIDO conducted a seven-day assessment of the region, which included meeting with stakeholders to map out strategies for how best to produce, package and market leather products from Sokoto for export.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto, said that his government is committed to establishing solid structures to develop the industrial capacities of the state. He affirmed his belief that Sokoto leather was “one of the best in the world” and promised that his administration would ensure those within the leather industry see the benefits of its success.
