Boost for Nigeria’s main leather cluster

Representatives of a Nigerian leathergoods manufacturing cluster have welcomed plans to formalise the sector, saying there is too much money lost due to unofficial exports.

Ken Anyanwu, national secretary of the Association of Leather and Allied Industrialists of Nigeria, told BusinessDay that there is no accurate data available for the leather sector.

The cluster in Abu is thought to employ around 40,000 and produce up to a million pairs of shoes per week.

The Sealink Project, spearheaded by the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, is expected to verify data so policymakers can boost growth.

In June, it was reported that the sector would benefit from the market for development (MADE) project, financed by the UK Department for International Development. Finished goods manufacturers were given access to finance and technology to help them increase exports.

Terry Lacey, team leader MADE, told the publication: “I think this is the chance to get the Aba leather industry on to the world stage.”
