Nigeria to clamp down on eating hides and skins

10/09/2014
The Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development has called for new regulations to stop people eating hides and skins as a delicacy so they can be used by the tanning industry, which is suffering a raw material shortage.

Akinwunmi Adesina told delegates at a meeting of the Animal Science Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) that farmers have a good chance of making higher returns if the hides and skins are tanned into leather.

He praised NIAS for its PR campaign on radio and TV that aims to reduce Pomo (eating skins) and educate people on the extra value that can be created from livestock.
