‘Eating animal skin is dangerous,’ warns Nigerian leather institute

The head of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST) has warned that eating animal hides and skins – a local delicacy – is dangerous, and could make people ill.

The custom takes raw material from the country’s leather sector - which is suffering a shortage - as the skins are often deemed more valuable as food.

Dr Isuwa Adamu said: “It is not advisable to consume ponmo in the sense that some of the animals killed and used for ponmo actually have skin diseases. Some of these skin diseases are such that boiling them may not kill the bacteria," Adamu said.

He added that sick animals that had been treated with injections, would still have chemicals in their skin.

NILEST is advising local governments on policies that will help to reduce the consumption of animal skin.
