Nineteen European countries will start exporting beef to Canada following the lifting of a ban imposed in 1996 following the detection of BSE.

"We call on our few remaining international trading partners who still maintain restrictive measures, to fully adopt recognised international standards," said the European Commission in a statement.

In February, Canada confirmed a case of BSE in its cattle and Taiwan, Peru and South Korea were among countries to impose trade restrictions.
