China to recommence imports of Brazilian beef

China’s president, Xi Jinping, has announced an end to his country’s ban on importing beef from Brazil.

Mr Xi chose a state visit to the South American country in mid-July as the moment to announce a change in policy. China imposed a ban on imports of beef from Brazil after confirmation of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the state of Paraná in 2012.

Following negotiations, China sent its own technical investigation team to Brazil in May 2014 and Mr Xi’s announcement came after tests proved negative.
