It became the fastest-growing market for imported beef.
From January to the end of August this year, the value of China’s beef imports are 17% higher than for the same period last year at $961 million.
“This is a major source of frustration for the US beef industry, because China is one of the few markets that did not reopen to US beef following the December 2003 BSE case,” said USDA.
China’s major beef suppliers are Australia, Uruguay and New Zealand, with Argentina and Canada also serving the market.
Thad Lively, US Meat Export Federation vice-president for trade access, said while efforts to regain access to China are progressing, the market is not likely to reopen soon.
