Brazil says BSE case in Mato Grosso is “atypical”

The cow went to slaughter on March 19 this year, but the team at the abattoir involved withdrew the animal from the production line because it was unsteady on its feet. It was slaughtered separately and the carcase disposed of.
MAPA has confirmed that its tests show the cow had BSE but it has said in a statement that the animal, a 12-year-old, was pasture-fed with only mineral salts as a supplement.
“These are the main characteristics of a case of ‘atypical’ BSE,” the statement continued. “It occurred spontaneously and is not related to the consumption of contaminated feed.”
