Russia lifts 27-year ban on British meat subproducts

Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) has cancelled a 27-year ban on importing beef and lamb subproducts from the UK.

They were banned in 1986 due to the discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease.

The product safety watchdog said the decision was the outcome of talks between senior Russian and British inspectors Yeveny Nepoklonov and Nigel Gibbens during which the UK offered guarantees on slaughter practices.

Russia's ban on importing British meat because of BSE was lifted last November.
